Season 2 Launch: What’s your Favourite Technique?

Welcome back to the Social Work Café.

I’m so excited to be launching season 2 of the podcast.

If you are new around here, I am Bernadette Moorhead, aka Dr. B, an Australian social work educator at Charles Sturt University (CSU).

I launched this podcast last year with the intention of making space for coffee and conversation about social work.

I had a great time interviewing my friends and colleagues, as well as social workers who reached out to me to come on the show!

They were all so generous with their time and wisdom.

I particularly enjoyed asking each guest to give the audience a concise definition of social work.

I recently took those responses and put them into a word cloud generator to see what phrases and terms were most frequent.

Check out this one, where I asked it to only capture the words that were used four times or more:

I reckon we could use these words to come up with a definition. How about this:

Social work is a profession that works with all people and communities to help with health and change.

What do you think? Not too bad, I think.

Perhaps you can play around with these words and come up with something.

If you do, let me know!

Enough about season 1.

It’s time to look at season 2 and what’s in store!

For this season, I am going to be a little more practical and ask each guest what their favourite technique is to use as a social worker and why.

I’ve been lining up a whole range of guests, some familiar and many new.

We are going to explore topics like wilderness therapy, youth mental health, rural practice, operating in the digital realm, disruptive practice, and a deeper dive into trauma-informed practice.

In the final episode, I’ll be inviting the fabulous Kasey Henshaw back onto the show.

I really enjoyed reviewing season 1 with her and cannot wait to hear how her first-year post-qualification goes!

Stay tuned for episode 1, out next week.

I invited Will Dobud back into the café to talk about his number one passion, wilderness therapy.

Let’s get wild social work.
